Nutritional Issues of Seniors in Canada

Posted Mon, Apr 22, 2013

wpStatistics of Canada show that lots of seniors can't afford to buy healthy food. This information was gathered by Canadian Community Health Survey for the year of 2008 and 2009. Most of the seniors who responded to the survey said they rarely ate fruits and vegetables, avoided cooking, and sometimes skipped entire meals. Instead they opted for more convenient foods such as ready-to eat meals and canned soups, which are often high in sodium and can lead to increased risk of strokes, heart disease and high blood pressure. Many of them live alone , which might be a great critical factor for isolated seniors with few social connections. Depression has been linked to malnutrition in past studies that show seniors with poor mental health often aren't motivated to cook meals or may not have the faculties to prepare their own food.
